How to Set an Informal Table

As dinner parties and entertaining at home become more popular, we are seeing more content surrounding "cosy casual" dinner tables.

An informal table should be laid out in a relaxed and comfortable way to set the mood for the evening. You don’t have to worry about any formalities in your home. You can go as fancy or as simple as you like.

Where should you start?

We recommend focusing on 3 elements when thinking about setting your table:

1. Choose your colour palette

2. Materials and napkins

3. Cutlery placement

Choose your colour palette

You can go as bold or as neutral as you please with this. Dip into neutral to nautical with vibrant sea blue hues and greens for those warm summer evenings.  Or if bold colours aren't your thing, add hints of pastel for a subtle pop of colour. Sorbet pastels evoke a fresh spring/ summer feel with a hint of retro appeal. Or take the relaxed approach and create a modern boho table that suits all home interiors. Pair rustic wood and neutral tones with a soft understated colour palette of beige and cream to create a light and airy table, perfect for relaxed dining.

Materials, napkins & foliage

One of the ways to add visual appeal to a casual table setting is through the use of texture. Table cloths, colour-coordinating napkins and table runners add an extra touch of cosiness. Linen is a great material to use for a casual table setting, it's relaxed texture brings softness to the tablescape. Adding different materials like wood and metal can also add an interesting touch to your table.

Plate chargers are often seen in formal dinner settings but wicker ones are great for adding texture to a table.

Adding foliage, flowers and centrepieces give it subtle pops of colour and adds depth to your table, making it look less bare and flat.

Cutlery placement

To set an informal table, place a dinner plate in the centre on top of a plate charger if you have one, a fork to the left, a knife and spoon to the right and a water glass above the knife.
